2001 Art-a-Whirl Seeks Volunteers, Artists, Coordinators

The Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association is having its kick-off event for the 2001 Art-a-Whirl event on Tuesday, Jan. 9. People interested in volunteering or showing their work should attend. Call for Entries for 'Nothing New: Fiber Art From Recycled Material'

The Textile Center of Minnesota's exhibition, "Nothing New: Fiber Art From Recycled Material," will showcase the work of national textile artists July 13 - August 15, 2001, at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design Gallery. Works must be constructed of recycled materials, must be original concepts executed by the artist, no kit or mass-produced items allowed, and must have been completed within the last two years. Artists must be over the age of 18.

The juror, Pat Hickman, professor of art at the University of Hawaii, will select one recipient for a $500 Ecolab Award of Excellence. Jurying will be completed by March 30, 2001. All work accepted by the juror must be available for the show - no substitutions will be allowed. Notification will be sent out to all artists who enter. The Textile Center retains a 25% commission on all sales, and handles all transactions. Not For Sale work must have a stated insurance value. TCM will insured all works while in the Minneapolis College of Design's possession, but not during shipping. ALL shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist. All work must be received by July 5 ready to install. Work cannot be hung from the ceiling.

Jury fee of $20.00 must accompany official entry form, available from TCM. Submit up to 3 pieces, with two slides of each piece, one overall view, one close-up. Slides must have artist's name, phone number, title of piece, and dimensions in upper left hand corner.
If work is accepted, slides will be retained by the Textile Center for publicity purposes.

Call for Artwork by Children with Learning Disabilities

The Brian Ayers Memorial Art Exhibition has placed a national call for artwork by children ages 11-19 with learning disabilities. Sponsored by The Boone Mall and the Avery Arts Council in North Carolina, the artwork will be displayed May 8-27, 2001, with an April 16 entry deadline.
The exhibition is not open to children with other exceptional educational needs than learning disabilities. There is no entry fee. Each artist may enter one original two-dimensional work of art, including painting, drawing, prints or mixed media, 22 x 26 inches or smaller. No photos, cartoons or other reproductions, computer art, framed works or sculpture. They may be unframed works, either matted or unmated. Attach a label to the back giving the artist's name, address, age and the title of the work. Mail entries to: LD Art, c/o WRAPS, 2331 Tynecastle Highway, Banner Elk, NC 28604.
All artists' works will be shown and each will receive a Certificate of Recognition. Artists whose works are selected by the juror for special merit will receive $50 awards. Jerome Travel & Study Grants, Deadline: March 16, 2001

Artists and arts administrators working for nonprofit arts organizations are eligible for Travel and Study Grant Program awards that support short-term and extended periods of travel for the purpose of professional development. Funded by the Jerome Foundation, General Mills Foundation, & Target Foundation, the program may support projects such as:

  • dialogue on aesthetic issues,
  • the experience of seeing artistic work outside of Minnesota,
  • time for reflection and individualized study,
  • the development of collaborations,
  • participation in specific training programs and research leading to the creation of new work.

Applicants may pursue funding in dance, literature, media arts, music, theater or visual arts, each of which has a three-person panel to recommend award recipients to the Board of the Jerome Foundation. Selection is based on the quality of the applicant's work and the significance and appropriateness of the proposed trip.
The program will award $133,000 in the seven-county metro area of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and $37,000 in Greater Minnesota. Applicants must have lived in the state for at least one year and must not be full-time students. 2001 McKnight Screenwriting Fellowship, Deadline: January 15, 2001

The Media Artists Resource Center (MARC), formerly Midwest Media Arts Access Center (MMAAC), is offering classes and workshops in film, digital video, still photography, and other fun stuff!
