Theatre Accessibility Conference planned

The Association for Theatre and Accessibility (ATA) will hold its 2001 conference, "Access to Success: Our Roots, Our Future," June 28 to July 1 in Columbus, Ohio at the Adam's Mark Hotel. Art Exhibit at Inside Out Gallery

"Larger than Life (Huge Drawings vs. the dishes)," an exhibit of work by artists with disabilities at Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, will run January 12 through March 31 at Inside Out Gallery, 212 Third Ave. N., Suite 140, Minneapolis. Have you listened to 'Disabled and Proud (it's NOT an oxymoron)'?

From the heart of Minneapolis comes a radio show that brings you insights into, ideas about and discussions of disability culture. And now, if you can 't pick up the frequency on your radio, you can hear it over the World Wide Web.
The goal of "Disabled and Proud (it's NOT an oxymoron)," a weekly show from KFAI-FM, is to educate and generate questions about disability topics. The live call-in shows also welcome your questions. Occasionally, the programs are prerecorded. It's every Tuesday night from 7:30 to 8, on KFAI 90.3 fm Minneapolis and 106.7 fm Saint Paul.

2001 Word Works Washington Prize: Call for Manuscripts

The Word Works will publish a volume of original poetry by a living American writer. $1,500 award. Send 48 to 64-page manuscripts between February 1 and March 1, 2001, inclusive. Author's name, address, phone, and signature should appear on the title page only. Include a table of contents containing the manuscript title, acknowledgments page, and brief bio. Use binder clip to fasten manuscript. No manuscripts will be returned. Entry fee: $20 U.S., payable to WORD WORKS. Winner will be selected by July 1, 2001, and published in January 2002. All entrants will receive a copy of the winning book. Mail manuscripts to: Word Works Washington Prize, 2245 N. Buchanan Street, Arlington, VA 22207.

Bloomington Art Center Artist Call

The Bloomington Art Center is seeking proposals from artists for its 2001-2002 Exhibition program. Open to artists from Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and Iowa, the BAC program offers exhibition opportunities at its own Gallery as well as at the Bloomington City Hall and Bloomington Oxboro Library. Individuals or groups working in all media except film and video are eligible. To apply, send 8 to 10 slides and other supporting materials, including slide list (indicating title, size and medium), resume and short proposal description. Slides should be in slide sheet with artist's name and address on each slide, and top of slide should be indicated. Include SASE for return of slides. Smithsonian's Fellowship in Museum Practice

The Smithsonian's Fellowships in Museum Practice (FMP) program provides opportunities for scholars and practitioners to write manuscripts suitable for publication on issues of importance to the museum field. The long-term goal of the program is to foster innovative scholarship and expand the availability of data that has the potential to improve museum operations. One fellowship, awarded annually for a period of up to 6 months, consists of a monthly stipend of $3,000 plus round-trip travel expenses between the recipient's home and Washington, DC, and research expenses of $1,000 for manuscript preparation. The program is open to recipients of master or doctorate degrees at least one year prior to appointment who would like to transform their thesis or dissertation into a publication, and to senior museum personnel and experts who have recently completed a major project or investigated an issue of concern and would like to share their findings and insights with the profession. NEA Grants Available for Rural or Underserved Areas

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will award approximately 400 grants of $5,000 or $10,000 for arts projects in rural or underserved areas. Eligible organizations may apply for existing or new projects that address one of two priority areas:
(1) Positive Alternatives for Youth: Creative Links: To support partnerships between arts organizations and community groups for artists' residencies that provide positive alternatives for youth, generally in grades 6-12. Projects are limited to artist residencies during non-school hours, artist-led programs, job training for youth and artist-teacher collaborations for in-school residencies. Applications must be received by February 1, 2001 for projects June 1, 2001 through May 31, 2002. (2) Community Arts Development: Arts REACH: To support partnerships between arts organizations and community groups that highlight the potential of the arts to address key community concerns. Projects are limited to development of cultural districts, civic design issues, development of community cultural plans and new technology to promote and market the arts. Applications must be received by May 2, 2001, for projects Sept. 1, 2001 through August 31, 2002.

Planning for Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Artists & Audiences

Is your organization working on its compliance plan for the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)? Have you had requests to provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters for your events or meetings? Would you like to incorporate more artists who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (D/HOH) into your programs and organization? Morgan Grayce Willow will present a workshop on Monday, Feb. 12, in St. Paul that is designed for artists, presenters of events, and managers of emerging to mid-size arts organizations. Topics include: what an interpreter needs; who is qualified to interpret your event; how to optimize your physical space to meet the needs of D/HOH audiences; how to build D/HOH access into long-range plans; and funding possibilities to help implement accessibility plans. Willow is a poet, interpreter, access consultant and author of Crossing That Bridge: Making Literary Events Accessible to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Audiences. The workshop is from 1:00 to 4:30 at PATH, 2324 University Ave. W., Room 120, St. Paul. It is copresented with SASE: The Write Place, and VSA arts of Minnesota. Cost of $55 covers two people per organization and includes a copy of Crossing that Bridge. Freelance Artists wanted

The Danbury Mint, a leader in the giftware/collectibles industry, is looking for talented freelance artists to design figurines including wildlife, licensed characters, sports, human figure, whimsical, and architectural. Must have strong realistic drawing and /or painting skills, strong conceptual thinking, ability to take verbal/written directions and come up with multiple, innovative solutions to problems, compose and draw 3-D subject matter in complex settings, be a resourceful researcher and talented in drawing licensed characters in action poses. Jobs at Harvest Moon Summer Camp

Harvest Moon Community Farm offers a summer art camp and a farm camp (non-residential) for children ages 6 to 11 near Scandia, MN. It has two job openings:

  • Camp Counselor to assist artist educators, teach agricultural and environmental lessons, support children with projects, coordinate teaching materials/supplies and facilitate creative play sessions. $10-12 an hour for June 4 to Aug. 17, M-F, 3 weeks each month, 60-80 hours per month. Meals lodging and transportation not provided. Send resume and cover letter explaining your interest and how this position will help you reach your educational and career goals.
  • Costume Designer will create 10 costumes for children's creative play sessions and 5 costumes for children's use during an art show (ages 1-5). Costumes relate to farms, animals, environment, celestial objects and art. Stipend paid based on experience and ability. Work off-site; materials and supplies provided by Harvest Moon.
