Messages of Support from Around the World

As an international organization, VSA arts has received many messages of condolence and support following the September 11 tragedies. Messages have come in from Albania, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Honduras, Hong Kong, Italy, the Netherlands, Panama, Peru, South Africa, United Arab Emirats, United Kingdom.

Albania: Condemning this terrifying crime we are sending our sympathy and respect in this difficult situation. We are close to you deeply convinced that USA and all other forces of progress will find the way to face this barbaric act. For all the victims and their families we extend our respect, and sympathy.

Belgium: Here, we are all thinking of you, in this world that we have built. What a world! It is a sign (too frequently) that we must continue to fight for the rights of the most vulnerable, for the recognition of their presence among others!

Greece: Our strongest wish is that you and the whole world get over this outrageous disaster in some peaceful way.

Colombia: With great pain we watched the images of a group of demented citizens attacking a civil population, leaving a blanket of death, pain, and desperate screams. From our country, we know the pain that these demented acts cause. We raise our voices in protest and extend our brotherly hands to wrap each of you with a hug that gives birth to new hope, so that we become capable of converting the pain we feel into a search for better tomorrows where the words terrorism, bombing, missile, gun -- words which provoke man to kill another -- may be replaced with dialogue, with peaceful coexistence, tolerance, respect, and honesty. This and only this will allow flowers to bloom from 5th Avenue to the mountains and rivers of Colombia.

Panama: We are profoundly sorry about the terrible acts which occurred in New York. We consider it unjust that problems of this nature have caused so many families such pain and mourning. In our country our people have shown countless support, and we are happy that you and your families are doing okay.

Canada: The attack on the United States of America is a horrific act. People in Canada are very upset. The American Consulate is closed but people have been going and leaving flowers at the front door. The streets are quiet and some people are crying. People are being sent home from work. It is feared that there are places here in Toronto which could be targets too. The hospitals here are prepared to take airlifted emergency victims of the terrorist attacks. We all seem to have friends or family somewhere in the U.S., especially in and around New York City.

2001 VSA arts Playwright Discovery Awards

Four recipients of the 2001 VSA arts Playwright Discovery Awards have been announced.

1st place: "The Trouble With Being Inspiring, by Helen Kilian of Wamego, KS. An intriguing story of disability discrimination in which Frances, a high school student with Cerebral Palsy, is offered an award for inspiring her classmates. Challenging the intentions of those who nominated her, Frances is torn between accepting and declining an award that promotes false perceptions. This play deftly explores the fears and assumptions people with and without disabilities have about each other and themselves.

2nd place: "I Play By Ear, by Deborah Yarchun & Katherine Gee of Austin, TX. Anna, the younger sister of Damon, who is Autistic Savant, narrates this story about a family who embraces Damon,s disability instead of allowing others, preconceptions to determine his future. Anna discloses each family member,s struggle and reveals how Autism is not so much about being different as it is seeing the world from a different perspective.

3rd place: "OC Me, by Jessica Carleton of Glenview, IL. Annie, a 16-year-old high school student, narrates her journey from discovery to recovery from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Her struggles and successes intermingle in this realistic portrait of a teenager with a hidden disability. "OC Me is intended to raise awareness about this mental health issue and empower those with OCD to find their own inner strength.

4th place: "What I See in Myself, by Luke Barats of Eagle, ID. When Aaron goes blind at 17 he thinks his baseball career is over. With help from his family and friends, Aaron realizes that blindness keeps him from seeing, but can't prevent him from doing anything else.

These playwrights were honored and two of the plays performed as part of the Playwright Discovery Evening, held at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. on October 1. Each playwright also received a cash scholarship and a commemorative award. Funds Assist Actor/Playwright Recovering from Accident

Minneapolis actor/playwright Kevin Kling was seriously injured Saturday, August 11, in a motorcycle/car accident enroute to doing his one-man show, 21A, during the Minnesota Fringe Theatre & Performance Festival. PBS-TV Children,s Program to Include Character with Vision Disability

The popular children's television program ARTHUR aired an episode on October 8 which introduced Marina, a character with visual impairment as a new friend of "cast regular" Prunella.
Here's the synopsis: The latest book about everyone's favorite boy wizard, Henry Skreever, is finally in stores! Every kid in town is lining up to get it...except Prunella, who's ordered a monogrammed, limited edition, coming all the way from England. She's in for a surprise, though, when they mix up her order and send a Braille version instead. Stay tuned for future episodes including this new character....
Based on the popular ARTHUR books by author/illustrator Marc Brown, this daily, animated children,s series follows the adventures (and misadventures) of eight-year-old aardvark Arthur Read, his four-year-old sister D.W., his friends and family. Now in its sixth hit season on PBS, the series is the highest-rated children,s show on television among 2- to 11-year-olds, attracting nearly 15 million viewers each week. ARTHUR has received four Daytime Emmy Awards, numerous other honors, and features two levels of closed captioning for viewers who are deaf and hard of hearing (near verbatim and edited for young readers who cannot take advantage of the program's audio) and audio description for viewers who are blind and visually impaired (in 1997 it made TV history as the first daily program to be entirely described).
