Pipeline Articles
Governor Proposes 7% Arts Funding Cut
Governor Jesse Ventura's proposals to solve Minnesota's $2 billion budget deficit include a combination of spending cuts and tax increases. These would include a 7% overall cut in funding to the Minnesota State Arts Board and Regional Arts Councils, starting July 1 (FY03). He urged the legislature to pass a reduced spending plan in early February.
According to Minnesota Citizens for the Arts (MCA), a large part of the 2002 legislative session may be spent figuring out how to deal with the state's budget deficit. On the whole, this proposal would not treat the arts worse than most other state agencies. However, by the time the legislature finishes its work in May, the arts funding picture may be better or worse than this proposal. To receive MCA Arts Alerts, contact mca@mtn.orgor go to Minnesota Citizens for the Arts (www.mtn.org/mca).

Acadia Has New Manager, Space Available
The new Theatre Manager at Acadia Cabaret Theatre in South Minneapolis is Laura Winton, also known artistically as Fluffy Singler. If you are a poet, performance artist, musician, or theatre artist/group and would like to do a show at Acadia, contact her. There's no upfront fee to use the space -- it's a split of the door that is weighted in favor of the performers. She will also try to make reasonable accommodations to get into the space for rehearsal as needed (and as available). Located at Franklin & Nicollet, Acadia has a restaurant/deli and serves wine and beer. The theatre seats 60-80. For more info, contact her at 612-874-8800, fluffysingler@prodigy.net or acadia_theatre@hotmail.com. Or go to their website at Acadia Cabaret Theatre in South Minneapolis (www.acadiatheatre.homestead.com).
Yahoo Group Resource for Artists and Groups
Here is a Yahoo Group that serves as a resource for Twin Cities area groups and artists to promote themselves to one another. Run by Fluffy Singler (Laura Winton), the site is fluffysingler - Twin Cities Live Poetry and Performance (www.yahoogroups.com/group/fluffysingler). Anyone can view its calendar as well as an extensive links site and a message/announcement archive. In order to post items you'll have to get a Yahoo ID and join the group; you can then add your own links and events. It's relatively painless once you get the hang of it, says Laura, and Yahoo does not spam people on these lists. This one's 360 members make it a good resource for individual artists and theatres as well. Send event notices to fluffysingler@yahoogroups.com to be included in a weekly digest.

Getting Publicity into Minnesota Monthly's Spotlight
How can you get your arts event publicized in Minnesota Monthly's Spotlight arts calendar? The magazine accepts listings for events involving music, visual arts, literary arts, dance, theater, family activities and special events like galas. Events listings are free and included on a space available basis. If you think some aspect of your event might make a good feature or news story, include that information with your press release. State who or what the story is, and why it is newsmaking. Include details about the event, a complete address for the event location, a phone number the public can call for information or tickets, website address, photos (cannot be returned), and how they can contact you. They will evaluate the idea, make a decision, and call you. Due to the volume of mail received, the staff is unable to verify or discuss the status of your information, so they request that you do NOT call to see if the information was received. Deadlines for the Spotlight sections are about 50 days before the dated issue (April items and photos are due before Feb. 10, May items before March 10, etc.). Minnesota Monthly also runs special sections throughout the year.
