Summary: Arts Career Development Workshops

VSA arts of Minnesota is offering a series of interactive workshops designed to help artists with disabilities focus on issues and solutions in their career interests in the arts. Individuals in both self-employment and traditional employment situations will find topics relevant to their situations at the workshops, which will be held in 12 locations around Minnesota in May, June and July.

Participants will:
Identify obstacles to achieving success in the arts;
Define resources to aid in overcoming specific obstacles;
Maximize income by knowing the effects of income on benefits;
Hear guest artists discuss what has fueled their success and how they have overcome obstacles;
Stoke the fires for your next success by documenting your current and past work;
Learn tips to advocate on your own behalf and support others in this process;
Name 10 nouns that will enable you to jump-start targeted marketing efforts;
Simplify your worst record keeping nightmares;
Celebrate your unique artistic expression with a reception and give-aways.

You will benefit from this workshop if you:

  • are an emerging or established artist with a disability;
  • are a person with a disability seeking to pursue the arts as a career;
  • are an arts administrator or rehabilitation professional that wants to know more about the arts as a career for people with disabilities;
  • belong to an organization that supports individuals with disabilities or individuals in the arts.

Workshop presenter Denise Martineau is an award-winning entrepreneur, visual artist, writer and educator. She has been profiled in Entrepreneur Magazine and the San Francisco Business Times. Denise has published with McGraw-Hill, University of California and Sybex Books and has served as an Acquisitions Consultant with John Wiley & Sons and Prentice Hall Press. Her visual art focuses on representing the forces of nature (various physical forms of energy) and their use in the universe.

These workshops are made possible by a grant from the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation with additional funding provided by VSA arts, which is working to create a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in and enjoy the arts.
